I have been obsessed with the phrase “Outside I skrrt skrrt, inside I hurt hurt.” since I heard it a few years ago. It perfectly encapsulates how I feel about typical American hustle culture. We want to move as fast as possible towards our goals and don’t give any thoughts to our body and feelings as we do so. Go. Go. Go. Beep beep, get out of my way.
Fast doesn’t have time for feelings. It doesn’t have time for hunger. It barely has time for sleep. Fast is “progress”. Fast is “innovation”. It doesn’t even care about your success because it’s onto the next goal. Our bodies are breaking down and we refuse to acknowledge it. Our hearts break and we move on to the next thing before we ever finish processing.
We try to create change in the same way. We want to eat healthier, so we throw away all of our processed foods. But then we get hungry and we have no idea what to eat because we’ve lived on fast food for so long. So we end up driving to P. Terry’s and get a cheeseburger or go to the grocery store and buy frozen TV dinners (because cooking takes too long). So we’re right back where we started, but now we feel guilty when we were set up to fail from the beginning.
If you want to make a change in your life, you need to slow down first.
I’ll say it again.
If you want to make a change in your life, you need to slow down first.
You can’t take a right turn while going 90mph in your car. Well, you can, but your car is going to flip over and your insurance rate is going to suck. Change is the same way.
