Magic is slow. It’s reading authors who feel like they know you & whose methods feel like second nature. It’s finding authors who sound stupid and who you completely disagree with and think “I don’t know why my friend recommended this book to me!”.
Magic is experimentation. It’s tweaking the same spell over and over again until finally it works the way you want it to work. It worked before, but in a weird indirect way that was more stressful than helpful. It’s learning discernment and how to be specific, but not so specific that you choke out potentially positive avenues for change.
Magic is building a relationship with herbs, animals and spirits. That takes time. That takes a willingness to wait to learn more as they open up to you. As they show you more of the beauty that lingers within them. The longer you listen, the more you’ll learn.
But eventually it will suddenly become fast. It’s spitting out the spiritual meaning of every herb in your friends tea. It’s going to the grocery store and knowing exactly what to buy to give to the local land spirits. It’s pulling the exact herbs you need for your spell off of your shelf without referencing your notes and reference books. It’s a dish that takes an hour to prep, but only needs 10 mins in the oven.
There is no need to rush your journey with magic. While it can be tempting to try and rush the process, there is no real way to do so. Taking short cuts can leads to gaps in your knowledge that you end up filling later down the road. Your goal will still be there in a few months, years or even decades. You’ll likely even find it fun to repeat the spells you did in your youth and see how they manifest now that you’re less green..
I’ll be honest, you can try and do that spell now. Go ahead. Gather your ingredients, make your mantras and set your intention. At best, it’ll come to fruition, but a hollow unsatisfying version of what you desire. At worst you’ll get what you want, but at the expense of something else you enjoyed.
Magic is in the results, yes. But it’s also in the in-betweens. The space in between each breath. It lives in the liminal spaces like relationships, time and energy. The longer you spend building your bonds with each part of your practice, the strong each spell will become. Time is the unsaid ingredient of so much spell work.
